Since we are living in Mwami, Zambia for a year, we were able to watch the “First Fruits Festival called Nchalla. During the celebration, the local people dress in furs as their ancestors did and dance. Some wore just a headdress, while others had a bit of an outfit on and jeans. As you can see, this gentleman went all out. He was actually part of the procession that went before the chief. We actually were able to meet the chief and have a quick chat with him.
Once again, I had a free Saturday morning, a drawing pad in my lap, and ambition galore! I started doing a piece that showed more of the man, but it wasn’t working out for me. So, I turned the page and started another piece. This time, focusing on his face and upper body. It was going wonderfully well right up to the point that I went too far and messed it up. Crap! With my allotted drawing time over, I sadly packed up the Port-O-Studio and went about the rest of the weekend.
Next Saturday came, and I had the house to myself. I cranked the tunes and started drawing. I had an entire week to think about how I would draw this one, and nothing was going to get in my way. So, I began with a sketch, then a bit more detail with my pencils.
