Watching the Range

Watching the Range

This piece is really the underdrawing for a French Wash painting of the same name. I took the reference photo in January 2023 on the plains of the Serengeti in Tanzania.

A common theme in this blog seems to be drawing a piece several times before getting it right. If I have to go through a couple of pieces of paper before I get something looking the way I want it, so be it. I would rather do that than put out a poor piece of art.

Since I knew I was going to do a French Wash over this drawing, I wanted it to be as tight as possible before adding oil paint. As you can imagine, the drawing took a bit more time than something on my drawing pad. Watching the Range took a week and a half to draw and was completed on a gesso-covered wood panel.

This was a very satisfying piece to draw and eventually paint.
