What's That

What's That

I am very happy with the way this piece turned out. I guess you could call this mixed media as it has ink, plus colored pencil, plus white charcoal, plus a white pen.

This drawing was inspired by a trip to South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. As we drove about, this little critter popped its head up just in time for this shot. Sure, I took others, but this one was the one I wanted.

Now I had the image I wanted to draw, and I had the tools at hand. Now, I just needed to do it. So, I sat down at the dining room table and went to work. After a bit of doodling, then revisions, and finally some more revisions, I was ready to break out my pens. I seem to be drawing more and more lately with pens, and there is a really good reason.   I’m away from home and don’t have access to all the fabulous stuff I have in my studio. On this topic, I have no spray fixative. If I did, I may do more graphite stuff, but I don’t want to come home with a bunch of smeared pencil drawings.

Fortunately, colored pencils don’t smear like graphite, and I used them to augment the color of this piece.
